I am delighted to share some really exciting news with you all - we have won at the Great Taste Awards for the third year in a row! Like last year we have won awards for every product that we entered. We proudly have three new awards to add to our family of award winning jams and preserves.

Our winners for 2019 are…Flair Strawberry Preserve, Ben Starav Blackcurrant Preserve and Seville Orange Marmalade.

Winning a Great Taste Award is great recognition of amazing tasting products and we feel it celebrates all the hard work that goes into every aspect of making this product for our customers.

The Great Taste Awards have a scoring system, where products can receive a different number of stars. On top of this the judges reviewing the entries provide feedback on each product. Below is the round-up for our winners.

RECIPE...Mango Jerk Chicken with Rice & Peas

We love our Limited Edition Alphonso Mango Preserve but surprisingly it isn't just for sweet dishes.  You can also use it in savoury dishes too to add a fruity sweetness. We have a delicious recipe to share with you for when you fancy making something a little different for dinner this summer.

Mango Jerk Chicken with Rice & Peas

The flavour combination of Jerk chicken with mango works really well and is seen in many recipes. The sweetness of the mango works really well with jerk seasoning, and this is true in this recipe as well.

Ingredients (serves two)

  • 2 chicken breasts, cut into strips

  • Tablespoon olive oil

  • Tablespoon jerk seasoning

  • 2 tablespoons Alphonso Mango Preserve

  • 100g basmati rice

  • Half a tin of coconut milk

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • Half teaspoon all spice

  • 2 spring onions

  • Half a tin of kidney beans

  • Chives for garnish (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.

  2. Mix the olive oil and jerk seasoning in a bowl then add the chicken and stir until it is well coated in the mixture.

  3. Lay it out on a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes.

  4. Remove from the oven and spoon over the mango preserve, then return to the oven for a further five minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.

  5. While the chicken is in the oven make the rice.

  6. Rinse the rice under cold running water and tip into a pan along with all the remaining ingredients except the kidney beans and chives.

  7. Season and add 150 ml cold water and set over a high heat. Once it boils, turn it down to a medium heat, cover and cook for 10 minutes.

  8. Add the kidney beans, cover and set aside for 5 minutes until all the liquid has been absorbed. Garnish with chives and serve with the chicken.

Spotlight On....Jalapeño Jam

This week I thought I’d focus on one of our best selling jams which is our Jalapeño Jam. Our range of chilli jams are incredibly popular and versatile, from being used as a condiment, a glaze or in place of a chutney.

The jalapeño chilli, pronounced ‘halapeno’, is a bullet shaped green chilli originating from Xalapa in Mexico which is what the chilli was named after. It is most commonly picked and eaten when it is still green, much like in our Jalapeño Jam, although if allowed to fully ripen it would turn red. Today, Jalapeño chillies have become very popular and mainstream in the UK due to the embedding of Mexican cuisine in our diets.

When it comes to our Jalapeño Jam, we are very proud that it won a Great Taste Award in 2017. The judges commented that ‘ The jalapeno aroma is excellent. The balance of sweet and heat works very well and the length of flavour is just wonderful. We loved its versatility and spent quite a while listing how it could be used.  Altogether a delicious, lively, well balanced piquant jelly.'

Jalapeño Jam is delicious with cheese, meats and even eggs. With that in mind, here are a few ways of using our Jalapeño Jam.

Jalapeño Jam makes a great accompaniment or topping for lots of different things. Loaded nachos is a firm favourite and rather than adding slices of jalapeños, drizzle over some Jalapeño Jam instead.

Eggs and Jalapeño Jam is a incredible combination. Try serving it with scrambled egg, drizzling over poached egg, or even with egg & soldiers smothering jalapeño jam on toast before dipping into a a runny egg.
